First edition. Inked inscription on the front free fly leaf by the author. Page edges uniformly tanned else a fine copy in a price-clipped dust jacket lightly sunned on the spine. Chad Morgan and his Sergeant Joc Jagger go through the Civil War together and come out of it with $25,000 worth of Confederate gold, which they hope to convert to a larger sum- first through Texas longhorns, then real estate as they promote the Kansas town, Pawnee City. Alder, one of Quantrell's men, follows them to Pawnee City and threatens exposure. The money brings bad blood between Morgan and Jagger, and the partnership is dissolved, as is Morgan's engagement to Jagger's sister. Jagger betrays Morgan to Alder and hires Alder to kill him, but in the end is the victim of his own corruption.
