Army Officer, Second Lieutenant Steven Mills & Apache Scouts Of Company D, 12th Infantry Regiment, Camp Thomas, Arizona, March 1880.

Publication: 1880, NP

Photograph of 22 Apache Scouts with officer Steven Mills. Cabinet Card. Image: 5.75" x 3.75". Mount: 6.5" x 4.25". Image of 22 Apache Scouts, arranged in 2 rows, with the back row standing and the front row seated on the ground. Each scout is holding a rifle, and all are in native dress; not in any uniform. Second Lieutenant Steven Mills is lying on his side, raised on one elbow, on the ground in front of the scouts. Mills commanded this group of Apache Scouts during Victorio's War, participating in the Battle of Hembrillo. Mills went on to be in charge of all Apache prisoners at Fort Marion later in the Apache Wars. An interesting photograph, but it shows a considerable amount of fading. A very small "x" has been made by previous owner just above the head of Mills. Very small chip to right edge and upper right corner of image. Some occasional soiling to edge of mount. In all, fair-good condition, and priced accordingly.
