This small book was incredibly important for Oregon history. The trail, a southern alternative to the dangerous Columbia River route on the Oregon Trail, was originally called the "Southern Route" or "South Road." When Walter Meacham published this booklet, he officially cemented the name "Applegate Trail" in the public mind. Decades later, in 1992, the U.S. Congress officially designated it a National Historic Trail using that exact name. Tiny closed tear to fore-edge of front cover and 1" split to bottom of spine, else a very good copy.
