Publication: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1947, Boston
First edition. Cloth, maps on front and rear endpapers, xxvii [blank], 483 pp., acknowledgments, preface, foreword, numerous illustrations by Miller, Bodmer, and Catlin; many in color, appendices, notes, bibliography, index. A classic work on the Mountain Men, with focus on the period of 1833-1838. Relates much on the adventures of Capt. Bonneville, Nathaniel Wyeth, and William Drummond Stewart. The illustrations provide a look at the only paintings of Rocky Mountain trappers actually made "on the spot" and the first paintings ever made of the Rocky Mountains, published here for the first time. Well-researched, excellent work. Highly recommended. Former owner has neatly affixed several full color pictures throughout the text that compliment the story and reflect the work of the famous artists involved. Fine in price-clipped dust jacket with slight wear to the head of spine and the corners.
