First edition. 12mo. Orange cloth, black ink and gold lettering on front cover and spine, tan endpapers, 165 [1] plus 10 pp. of advertising, preface. Graff 3503 says, "Rideing accompanied Lieutenant George M. Wheeler on his survey, during a two-year period, acting as a newspaper correspondent. He traveled 4,000 miles a-saddle in New Mexico, Southern Colorado, Nevada, and Eastern California." An interesting first-hand account of the western frontier. Offers a vivid account of frontier life to include encounters with Native American tribes (notably the Pueblo and Navajo peoples); descriptions of frontier settlements and mining towns; observations of geological features and reflections on Anglo and Hispanic cultures in the region. Small abrasion to lower portion of front paste-down sheet, light wear to spine ends and corners, else a very good, solid copy.
