Publication: Harpers New Monthly Magazine, 1853, New York

First Edition. Disbound. Pages 306-334. Illustrations. Appears in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Volume 7, August 1853. An account of the author's journey over the Old Spanish Trail from El Pueblo de Los Angeles to Taos, New Mexico with the famous scout in 1848. Gold had just been discovered in California at the close of the Mexican War, when Kit Carson started East from Los Angeles with dispatches. With him as far as Taos came Lieutenant George Douglas Brewerton, who gives an engrossing account of the journey on the Old Spanish Trail from Los Angeles to Santa Fe, 1500 miles of wilderness. They endured thirst on the long desert jornadas, hunger and danger from mountain streams and Indian attack. An important record of this early Southwest journey and a first-hand account of Kit Carson. Disbound by previous owner who bound it into stiff decorative wrappers for protection and preservation. Previous owners name and date 1855 neatly written on blank endpaper.
