First edition. 8vo. Color pictorial wrappers, 108 pp., preface, illustrated, advertisements, index. The Veiled Prophets are an organization founded in 1878, in St. Louis, Missouri, which conducts an annual Autumnal Festival and a Ball. The founders' intent was to create a local celebration in the likeness of Mardi Gras, including pageantry and costuming as well as a parade with floats. Each year, one member of the Veiled Prophets Organization is chosen to serve as the "Veiled Prophet of Khorassan," donning a sheik-like garb to preside over the Ball. The event is held each year in St. Louis. This booklet is the Official guide for the 6th Annual Veiled Prophets Autumnal Festival. There are 24 full-page color pictures that depict the Household of the Veiled Prophet, the Veiled Prophet and his High Priests, and individual pictures of floats entered in the pageant. Accompanying each float is a story of its origin and meaning. The advertisements are numerous and include a full-page picture of the Anheuser Busch Brewing Company, and 87 other prominent businesses. Light wear to the spine panel, small corner portion missing from the bottom of the rear cover panel, a small "ding" to top edge of rear cover that extends into the upper margin of some pages, and light wear to the extremities, else the interior is clean as are all the color plates. Overall a very good copy of a most unusual booklet which provides information on a society that is active to this day.
