First edition. 12mo. Original brown cloth, titles stamped ingilt on the front cover and spine, Melinda Rankin was a Presbyterian missionary and teacher. In 1847 she came to Texas and in 1854 opened the Rio Grande Female Institute in Brownsville. During the Civil War she was forced to leave Texas and taught free blacks in New Orleans. Her story begins with her work in Kentucky and includes Texas and stints in Mexico as well. Raines page 171 says "Presbyterian missionary life on the border, mostly in Texas." Former owner's neat name stamped on front pastedown sheet, else a near fine, bright and clean copy
