Other works by HIMES, GEORGE H.

Publication: Chausse-Prudhomme CO, Printers, 1924, Portland, Oregon

First edition. 8vo. Printed wrappers, [2] - 339 - 435 pp. Information regarding the reunion include a meeting of the Board of Directors, a program list, the banquet, booths, business session, list of past presidents, pioneer necrology, and annual address by Charles A. Johns. On pages 372-435 we find the journal of Henry Allyn; a record of daily events during a trip from Fulton County, Ill., across the plains to the Willamette Valley, Oregon Territory, in the year 1853. Mattes 1333 says: "Here is one of the most detailed and informative of 1853 journalists. Allyn is keenly observant, has strong opinions about the shortcomings of mankind, and was capable of strong prose -- though he wasted none of it on the North Platte landmarks, which he thought over-rated. His account sheds light on the incident that triggered the fatal fight at Fort Laramie ferry, presaging the Grattan Massacre of the following year. Using Andrew Child's guidebook, he accepted Child's word for it that he was the one who, in June 1850, first used the north side route west of the fort." Fine copy.
