First edition. 8vo. Red cloth, titles in black on the front cover and spine, 211 [1] pp., preface, references, acknowledgments, illustrated. Tom Bass was born a slave in 1859, became friends with several U. S. Presidents, declined an invitation to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and when he died in 1934, Will Rogers spoke for the nation in venturing that St. Peter would admit him on horseback into Heaven where he would surely win a blue ribbon. Tom's horses were always intelligent and bold, responsive to his skilled devotion. Tom lived in Mexico, Missouri. A bit of light rubbing to the cloth spine ends, else a near fine copy in an attractive wraparound dust jacket design.
