First edition. Quarto. Brown cloth, titles and pictorial device stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine, xi [blank], 190 pp., plus 6 pp., author's note, numerous illustrations, portraits, index. Written by 2 old life-long cowboys, this excellent work records the history and development of saddles and saddle-makers in the West. Much detailed information and illustrations regarding regional variations. Relates the history of numerous saddlemakers: J.B. Sickles Co., Hermann H. Heiser, George Lawrence Co., E.L. Gallatin, Collins Brothers, Keyston Brothers, Visalia Stock Saddle, Pueblo Stock Saddle, Tom Flynn, Frank Meanea, Hamley Brothers, Fred Mueller, Guadalupe Garcia, Newton Porter, S.D. Myres, Victor Ario, Connolly Brothers, Olsen-Nolte, Monroe Veach, Ray Holes, and many others. Laid-in is a three-page typed letter, signed by Lee M. Rice on his letterhead of Western Horseman. The Magazine For Admirers of Stock Horses. The very chatty letter was written in 1955 and says, in part, "...... a lot of hard work and research go into the preparation of those articles. I have a few more to finish then it is my plans to some day to [sic] bring them out in book form." (This book). A minor "ding" to lower front cover, else near fine, in a price-clipped dust jacket that is sunned on the spine, a tiny closed tear to the top edge of the front cover and minor wear to the extremities. An important work. Scarce and avidly sought.
