First edition. 8vo. Bright orange cloth, viii [4], 228 pp., foreword. The biography of Jeff Ake who lived on the Texas frontier and claimed to be personally acquainted with many well known outlaws. He relates stories about Bill Longley, Ben Thompson, King Fisher, John Wesley Hardin, Jesse James, Cole Younger, Bill Doolin, Sam Bass, Billy The Kid, and Pat Garrett, among others. The subject of the book, Jeff Ake, was recommended to the author by Eugene Manlove Rhodes as biographical material. Ake drove cattle from Arkansas to California across Texas, ranched in California in the '50s, fought Indians, served with N. B. Forrest in the Civil War, knew John Wesley Hardin, Ben Thompson and other gunmen. Author W. H. Hutchinson once commented in part that "They Die But Once, should be billed as the most interesting of all Rhodes association items. That's what I called it in Bar Cross Liar." Fine bright copy in the striking orange and black pictorial dust jacket with minor wear to the extremities. Scarce in such fine condition.
