Publication: MacFadden Publications, Inc, 1945, New York

Story appears in Master Detective magazine, September, 1945. Very good copy. A fellow bookseller comments as follows, "We recently saw this 7 page photo illustrated true crime story attributed to the author of INVISIBLE MAN in a well-known ABAA bookseller's catalog. We too wondered if it could possibly be the great black novelist's work when we first came across a copy a few years ago, and so we sent to him with several books he'd agreed to sign. When the magazine came back with the signed books, there was a 40 word note from Fanny Ellison on the back of a small color photo which said, 'Thanks so very much for sending the Master Detective for Ralph. A note from him will go to you soon. He did not write the piece.' We never received the promised note from Ralph; he died a few months after Fanny's note." An interesting bit of information that will be noted by booksellers and bibliographers of Ralph Ellison. Magazine and Fanny Ellison's original handwritten on the back of a photograph.
