Publication: University of Oklahoma Press, 1966, Norman

First edition. 8vo. Two Volumes. Cloth, 464 pp. + 60 plates, 449 pp., 11 maps, 5 large folding maps. In 1805 and 1806, Pike led the first official U.S. expedition to explore the upper Mississippi River. In 1806 and 1807, Pike explored the Great Plains and lower Rocky Mountain regions. Straying into Spanish territory he was captured, taken to Santa Fe, then to Mexico, and eventually he was escorted back to the United States under guard. Jackson shows his outstanding skills in editing Pike's journals, as well as letters and other related documents, to form this fine work. A fine set in a fine original slipcase. An important and scholarly work.
