Ethel Thomas is a chain-smoking, highly opinionated seventy-five-year old author and spinster whose hobby is solving murder mysteries. She travels to Hollywood to supervise the filming of one of her books. In Hollywood, an antique shop serves as a cover for gambling rooms in the rear. The owner of the shop draws Ethel's niece, Stella, and her fiancé, Peter, into a diabolical plot with a murder charge against them. Upon Ethel's arrival, Stella is being blackmailed, not for money, but to become the mistress of a powerful gambler. If Stella agrees, the gambler will destroy films that show Peter on the scene of a possible murder. And then there's a second murder and dear Aunt Ethel must act quickly to learn the identity of the killer, a killer who is now on her trail!
