[portrait of Stephen F. Austin], preface, double column, illustrated, portraits. This volume provides biographical sketches of prominent men and women of Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico and Indian Territory. There are ninety fine steel plate portraits with tissues, of these prominent people of the area. Raines p. 31 says, "Begins with fine sketches of Austin and Houston. A valuable book of biographical reference." Howes B849 says, "Biographies of leading men of Arkansas, Colorado, Indian Territory, New Mexico and Texas." Contains sketches of General Lew Wallace, Hon. Miguel Otero, Governor W. F. M. Arny, Stephen F. Austin, James Bowie, W. L. Cabell, Henry S. Ervay, J. S. Ford, and many others. Also included are essays on railroads, acreage owned by railroad companies, a few family biographical sketches, agriculture, mining, grazing interests, etc. Original owner's name and date in two places, a brief comment by second owner telling when and from whom he bought this volume, and some scattered light pencil markings, else a remarkably near fine copy in original condition, housed in a cloth slipcase with leather label on spine.
