First edition. 16" x 11 1/4" pictorial, black & white newsprint, 16 pp., illustrated. FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER. New York, April 15, 1882, Vol. LIV, No. 1,386. Contains on page 6 the significant article headed "The Death of A Notorious Desperado". It begins "The most notorious outlaw in the country met his death at St. Joseph, MO., last week, when Jesse James, leader of the gang of train robbers who had become a terror to travelers in the far West, was shot by Robert Ford...." Of most importance is that this issue features a great full page illustration captioned: "The House, at St. Joseph, in Which the Notorious Desperado, Jesse James, Was Killed, April 3rd - The Popular Excitement After the Shooting" which shows a huge crowd gathering at the house. It is sad to note that on April 3, 1882 Jesse James stepped up on a chair to dust a picture. “But the dirty little coward who shot Mr. Howard,” Robert Ford, seized the opportunity and shot James in the back of the head. Ford and his brother Charley would be indicted, plead guilty to murder, sentenced to hang, and be pardoned by the Governor of Missouri all in the same day. It is very rare to find any sort of graphic concerning the death of Jesse James. Interestingly enough, Harper's Weekly had no report on the event. Sixteen pages with a small news agents stamp at the top of the front page, in very good condition.
