Publication: Old West Publishing, 1976, DENVER

First edition. Simulated leather, 246pp. Num. illus., some in color. 3 large folding maps in pocket at rear. Interesting narrative of Barclay's life in the West, 1810-1855. This record is comprised primarily of his letters home and his memorandum diary that he kept from 1845 to 1850. Barclay had a varied career, from London corsetier to pioneer farmer in Canada, bookkeeper in St. Louis, superintendent of Bent's Fort, fur trader and mountain man in Colorado and New Mexico, and builder of Barclay's Fort on the Santa Fe Trail, New Mexico, in 1848. A fine contribution to the sparse first-hand accounts of the latter stages of the fur trade in the Southwest. Much information about Bent's Fort and the Santa Fe Trail. Fine in fine dust jacket.
