First edition. 8vo. Signed in ink by the author on a paper label and laid-in. Red cloth with signature of Sitting Bull and Buffalo on front cover in gilt, xvi [2], 350 pp., frontispiece. [portrait of Sitting Bull], preface, acknowledgments, illustrated, map of Custer's last battle, bibliography, index. Luther High Spot 92, says "... Vestal studied with the Sioux for many years and gives us much information in regard to the battle." Further commentary on page 66 of Custeriana, A Field Guide To Custer Literature, by Swinford and Luther, Vestal says with respect to the Indian narrator, "Vestal mentioned in his preface to the 1956 edition of Sitting Bull that he found Indians still afraid to talk about their participation in the battle of the Little Big Horn as late as the 1930s. He asserted that the early accounts were by liars and, that the Indians who did talk said only what their agent wanted them to say. Otherwise, the interpreter would edit their account." Still today remains the classic account. Gilt titles on spine worn away, else a very good, tight copy.
