Seth Eastman was an artist and West Point graduate who served in the U.S. Army, first as a mapmaker and later becoming a well known artist. Eastman's military record as preserved in the Adjutant General's Office, War Department, is as follows, "On duty at Fort Crawford, Wisconsin, with regiment, 1829-1830, and at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, 1830-1831; on topographical duty 1831 to January 9, 1833; Assistant Teacher of Drawing, USMA, to January 22, 1840; in the Florida War 1840-1841; with regiment at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, from 1841 to 1846; on recruiting service in 1846; at Fort Snelling, with regiment, 1846 to 1848; on march Texas to San Antonio, Frederickburg, and the Neuces River, 1848-1849." Includes 15 plates done by Eastman to coincide with his military service. Fine in printed wrappers.
