18 letters, a copy of a telegram plus 3 other letters not to Hoover. ALS"s. Fine grouping. When Richard King and Mifflin Kenedy dissolved their partnership in 1867, Kenedy took over the Laureles Ranch, 22 miles south of Corpus Christi. The ranch was then sold to The Texas Land and Cattle Company, Limited of Dundee, Scotland for $1,100,000. Captain John Tod of Edinburgh, Scotland was appointed manager of the Laureles Ranch and of other company properties in Texas. Tod in 1900 was directed to sell the Laureles Ranch and over a period of six years the property passed to Mrs. Henrietta M. King. The Laureles Ranch is now the largest division on the King Ranch. This series of letters were written to H.E. Hoover, the company attorney in Canadian, Texas between November 1898 and March, 1899, relative to lands owned by the Texas Land and Cattle Company in the Panhandle region of Texas and would indicate that the Texas Land and Cattle Company had begun to dissolve their holdings in Texas before the sale of the Laureles Ranch. Tod was a crusty character and was quite direct. He wrote Hoover on December 31, 1898 stating with regards to erecting fences on a portion of the company's property: "Take all lawful precautions, and use all lawful means, and oppose unlawful force (if used) with lawful force. The thing must be done." Very good, legible copies.
