Publication: J C Bardell, 1936, San Francisco

First edition. 3" x 4 1/2" original, color, pictorial mail folder containing 18 black & white postcards, each with a title and a short description on verso. An uncommon tribute to what would become the largest and most expensive bridge of its time. Ground was broken in 1933, but many believed the construction was to be an impossible task given the turbulent waters, gusty winds, and inaccessibility to bedrock in the bay. Political hurdles were also an impediment as there had been talk about building a bridge between Oakland and San Francisco since the 1870s but it was not possible until the Reconstruction Finance Corporation supported by President Herbert Hoover agreed to purchase bonds to be repaid later with bridge tolls, that the project moved forward and was completed in 1936. The postcards, published shortly after the opening of the bridge, included views of the construction work, framing, excavating the tunnel, engineers and construction workers, and finally the completed bridge in all its glory. The cards are each in fine condition. The original mail folder is rubbed around the edges, and has been addressed in ink but apparently never sent, otherwise the mail folder is in very good, serviceable condition. This is not only a unique item but also a very scarce one with OCLC listing one copy at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Library.
