First edition. Both volumes are Senate Document No. 247, 55th Congress, 2nd Session, 1898. Report documenting a four-year project to survey and re-mark the boundary between the United States and Mexico west of the Rio Grande, including text of various relevant treaties and conventions, documentation regarding astronomical determinations and geodesy, explanations of the surveying methods, descriptions of topography, and various other relevant information along with photographs, data tables, and supplementary illustrations. Volume I: Quarto. Full leather binding, 240 pp., illustrated, frontispiece, plates, charts, tables, diagrams, two foldout charts, list of errata. Plates are captioned in both English and Spanish. Spine has been replaced with new spine panel laid-down, three leather labels on spine with titles stamped in gilt, extremities rubbed and with small chips, interior clean and tight. Volume II: Oblong quarto. A Pictorial album of views of the monuments and characteristic scenes along the boundary between the United States and Mexico west of the Rio Grande. Full leather binding, n. p. (contains 258 full-page, half-tone photographic plates, printed on one side with captions in English and Spanish). Spine has been replaced with new spine panel laid-down, Senate library label on front cover, three leather labels on the spine with titles stamped in gilt, covers scraped and rubbed, extremities rubbed and with small chips, a few plates reinforced along edges. Each of the two volumes is quite heavy and are very serviceable thanks to the professional restoration to the spine and internal reinforcement, overall very good condition.
