Publication: Nixon-Jones Printing Co, 1895, St Louis

First edition. Thick 8vo. Original decorated cloth, xiii [blank], 645 pp., frontis., preface, numerous illustrations, including 27 plates, "A complete history of the gold and wonderland of the Dakotas from the remotest date up to the present, comprising a full account of the original inhabitants, the whites who came in contact with them; opening up of the country for civilization, and its social and political development." A very scarce work with much information on the Sioux Indians, the Cheyenne, the Crow Indians, early exploration of the west and southwest, General Custer, Indian wars, gold mining, Wild Bill Hickok, and other local and regional history. Former owner's bookplate on front pastedown sheet, lightly rubbed at spine ends and corners, white library numbers at foot of spine and library number stamped at two places in the book, else a very good tight attractive copy. Jennewein 125 rates this title as one of the five most important books on the Black Hills.
