First edition. Signed on title page, as well as inscribed on front free endpaper by the author. Fine in fine dust jacket. Albert Samson, a self-employed private detective, is currently bartering his services as a watchman in a bank president's home in exchange for a home that doubles as an office. His curiosity is aroused when Douglas and Paula Belter ask him to find out why Mrs. Belter's birth certificate has been counterfeited. Samson's only other client is Normal Bates, a seventy-six-year-old retired private eye. That there should be a link between the Belters is improbable; but these two seemingly routine cases become suddenly united by two far from routine murders. As Samson delves into the past, he unearths faded photographs, sensational newspaper clippings, incomplete records and suspicious bank transfers.
