First edition. 8vo. "Paso Por Aqui" is one of two stories that make up this volume. The other story being "Once In The Saddle." Written by the acknowledged master of the Western story, Gene Rhodes, "Paso Por Aqui" is the story of a cowboy bandit who checks his flight from the law to aid a Mexican family stricken with diptheria; the sheriff, impressed by the selfless act, allows his escape. This story was first serialized in 1926 in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST, and has been considered Rhodes's masterpiece. In 1948, United Artists released this story using the title FOUR FACES WEST. The movie starred Joel McCrea in the leading role, Charles Bickford as the pursuing sheriff, Pat Garrett, with Frances Dee, Joseph Calleia, William Conrad, and others. ONCE IN THE SADDLE was first serialized in 1925 in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST, and is the story of how a greedy mine owner is exposed when he tries to claim another man's water rights. Both of the stories are set in south central New Mexico. On the front fly leaf of this copy is a full page explanation of the book from Harrison Leussler to Paul Jordan-Smith. Herman Leussler was an editior at Houghton Mifflin Company and Paul Jordan-Smith (April 19, 1885 – June 17, 1971) was an American Universalist minister who also worked as a writer, lecturer and editor. Academically, he is regarded as one of the foremost authorities on the 17th-century British author and scholar Robert Burton. Fine, bright copy, lacking the elusive dust jacket.
