Publication: Bradbury, Agnew & Co Ltd, 1911, London

First edition. Thick 8vo. Inked presentation inscription from the author on the front fly leaf. Original dark green cloth with beveled edges, titles and decorative devices stamped in gold gilt and black on front cover and spine, xxvi, 337 pp., plus xix pages of oil-related advertisements, folding frontispiece, author's note, illustrated, plates, portraits, diagrams, maps, teg., advertisements. Swanson page 62 says "Endeavors to develop oil production in New Zealand, beginning near close of 1865; review of shale oil industry of New Zealand." J. D. Henry was the best known British oil journalist at the beginning of the 20th Century when the modern international oil industry started. His observations of the oil industry 90 years ago carry a certain resonance today particularly his survey of Baku Oil which he claimed was instrumental in the development of the modern oil industry. He produced a number of extensive studies on the oil industry in the early 20th Century, all of which are very scarce. The publisher's catalogue at the rear is quite interesting and certainly reflects the technology of the day. Included in this volume are 4 portraits with annotated tissue guards intact, with 32 illustrations, and 10 maps and diagrams. Two former owner's names at top of front fly leaf, scattered foxing throughout although more so near the front and near the edges of the volume, else a very good copy of a scarce book.
