Two volumes. First editions. VOLUME I: 16mo. Signed by the compiler on the front free fly leaf. Above the inscription is "No. 69" suggesting small limited printings for the volume. Green cloth, gold stamping on spine, 158 pp., foreword, illustrated, portraits, roster of men of the Mier Expedition. VOLUME II: 12mo. Signed by the compiler on the front free fly leaf. Above the inscription is "No.24" suggesting small limited printings for the volumes. Green cloth, gold stamping on the spine, 161 pp., foreword, index. An important compilation of first-hand accounts, letters and other documents, concerning the disastrous Mier Expedition of 1842-1843, the forced march of the Texas prisoners through Mexico and their incarceration in the fortress-prison of Perote in Veracruz. A portion of Volume I was published as a pamphlet in 1912, otherwise most of the material is previously unpublished, including letters from the prisoners at Perote back to their families. Although Volume II is stated as "Second Edition" on the title page, what is actually meant is "Second Volume," the contents, as indicated in the author's preface, are completely new material. The spine on Volume II is stamped "Vol. 2." Both volumes are scarce and are seldom available together. Light wear to head of Volume I, else a near fine set.
