First and only edition. 12mo. Original black cloth, [1v], 221 pp., preface, numerous illustrations. A very rare brand book, covering the northwestern corner of California, as well as southwestern Oregon, and the adjacent Nevada border region, with approximately 2000 brands represented. The authors give a brief account of the project in their preface: "Apropos to the publishing of this Stock Directory, the members of the Modoc Grand Jury who were in session at Alturas, December 3, 1900, made the request that we get together and publish all the brands in this county…we have endeavored to obtain each and every brand in Modoc County, those of the southern part of Klamath and Lake Counties, Oregon, those of the eastern part of Shasta and Siskiyou counties, those of the northern part of Lassen county, and the western border of Nevada. We gathered these brands at a great cost; they were all engraved by our own hands, and we put this book on the market at no less than $1000 cost…" Includes 707 entries on 189 pages (with a few ads interspersed); most entries with at least two brands and some with as many as seven. A small section of 95 names is also provided "the brands of parties, who, for reasons of their own, did not care whether their brands were published or not, but we print them in this small form, numbered and indexed, for the benefit of those who desired their brands published in full, and to make this book complete." Also included are an index to names and an index to brands. Early inked ownership inscription of Stella Gray Ball [?], Merrill, Oregon on front paste-down, terminal endpaper, and top of page 68, else a very good, tight copy of a rare brand book.
