Prepared by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington. 20 1/2" x 27" sheet folded to 32 panels and printed on one side only. Hand-colored map of the state of Texas showing counties, principle cities, major creeks, rivers, county seats, roads, railroads, mountains, forts, etc. Completed railroads of the Southwestern System are hand-drawn in blue ink; railroads of the Southwestern System that are under construction or are projected are hand-drawn in red ink. Northernmost portion of map shows Indian Territory; Easternmost portion of map shows a bit of Louisiana. Railway lines depicted on this map include Texas and Pacific, Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Kansas Pacific, International &Northern, Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe, New Orleans and Pacific, etc. Westernmost portion of the state offers 5 large counties, not yet developed to include El Paso County, Presidio County, Pecos County, Crockett County and Tom Green County. Interesting note: San Antonio is labeled with the feminine "San Antonia." The map shows the projected western expansion of the Texas & Pacific Railroad from Howard County to El Paso del Norte; the projected northwestern expansion of the Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad from Belton through Farmer County; and the projected southward expansion of the International Railroad from Pleasanton to Laredo. Inset at bottom left is 7 3/4" x 12" black and white map entitled, "General Map of The South West and Its Connecting System of Transportation" with the state of Texas hand-colored in pink; the remainder of the map is black and white. Map shows from east coast to west coast and north from Wyoming, Michigan and Pennsylvania south to Mexico, Cuba and the Bahamas. Map shows railroad system throughout the states and with concentration in Texas, with railroads primarily from Austin eastward. Also shows railway line from Austin and southward through Mexico to Queretaro and onto Mexico City. Railway lines depicted on this map include Texas and Pacific, Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Kansas Pacific, etc. Panhandle and western Texas show no cities or towns. Panhandle states Llano Estacado while western most portion of the state shows Presidio del Norte. Inset at top left is 5 1/2" x 7 1/4" hand-colored map entitled, "The Northern Part of Texas" showing the counties from east to west showing Hallam to Lips Comb, and showing the southern counties from Farmer and Childress counties. Shows the Ft. Worth and Denver Railway's projected or under construction railroad from the southeastern-most portion of Childress County through Donley, Armstrong, Carson counties and ending at Wheeler in Potter County (hand-drawn in blue ink). Also shows the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway projected or under construction railroad through Farmer County (hand-drawn in blue ink). Map also shows portion of Indian Territory with Greer county shaded in green. Map has light wear to edges and small holes at some folds. A very good copy.
