First edition. Oblong 8vo. Inked gift inscription on the title page signed and dated in the year of publication by the author. Cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, "Narrow Gauge Railways of Canada" on front pastedown sheet and "Timetables" on rear pastedown sheet, 112 pp.,dedication, foreword, Narrow Gauge introduction, illustrated, mostly from photographs, maps, appendices. The author's survey indicates the Province of Ontario was the birth place, in July 1871, of the first narrow gauge, steam-operated public railway in North America. And the Lingan Colliery Tramway in Cape Breton may have been in 1866, the first narrow gauge steam-operated railway in the Western Hemisphere. Two dozen different railway systems are covered within the book's twenty-three chapters. There are 128 rare photographs from private collections and never before reproduced. Also included are listings of mileage, chronological and geographical facts about each system, with locomotive information. Fine in dust jacket with a tiny chip to head of spine, a closed tear to top edge of rear cover, and a few tiny nicks and closed tears to top edge of front cover.
