First edition. 8vo. Author's first book. Helen Hull Jacobs (August 6, 1908 - June 2, 1997), was a World No. 1 American female tennis player who won ten Grand Slam titles. She was ranked in the world top ten from 1928 through 1939 (no rankings issued from 1940 through 1945), reaching a career high of World No. 1 in those rankings in 1936. With the exceptions of 1930 and 1938, Jacobs was included in the year-end top ten rankings by the United States Tennis Association from 1927 through 1941. She was the top ranked U. S. player from 1932 through 1935. In 1933, Jacobs became the first woman to break the tradition by wearing man-tailored shorts at Wimbledon. During WWII she served as a commander in the U. S. Navy Intelligence, one of only five women to achieve that rank in the Navy.
