Map 20 3/4" x 26 1/2". A map of the United States with vignettes illustrating buffalo and their extermination from 1492 until 1951. Sketches show scenes of destruction with notes and other factoids indicating the diminution of the herds, significant settlements, the date the last buffalo was killed in each state, and the number of places named after buffalo in each state. An inset box notes "Once Gone, Gone Forever" cites the number of buffalo in 1493 (60,000,000) and the number in 1889 (541), with a "miraculous comeback but still only a token" (United States - 9,252; Canada - 13,902) in 1951. Never folded, fine condition. The map includes extensive dates, locations and details of the bison's movements throughout the United States, chronicling the near extinction and subsequent efforts dedicated to saving the species. Other lines highlights the precipitous decline in range and population following the arrival of Europeans. Bevans notes in each state the year the last buffalo was killed. Fortunately, due to extensive public and private endeavors, as of 2019 some 500,000 bison have been restored in over 6,000 locations, including public lands, private ranches, and Native American lands. Uncommon map; less than 10 copies located in online institutions.
