Publication: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1889, London

7 1/2" x 5" in black illustrated boards; frontis; 1-10, [8], 207, 11-20 pp; maps; illustrations; advertisements. The pages 1-10 and 11-20 at the beginning and end of the main text are full of advertisements. Illustrations include 3 fold-outs (2 of the three are maps) and many black and white images. The Lesser Antilles (British West Indies) includes the islands of Barbados, Tobago, Trinidad, Grenada, The Grenadines, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Dominica, Montserrat, Antigua, Nevis, St. Kitts, and the Virgin Islands. The contents of the guide include chapters on the area, population and price of crown lands in the Lesser Antilles; lines of route; the voyage; description of the Islands of the Lesser Antilles (including Trinidad); information for intending settlers; the cultivation of sugar, cacao and coconuts; other industries; the colored races; education and religion; vegetation and animal life; and dollar and sterling table, with export duties. The book reads like a travel log from island to island, with considerable detail. Obviously written to entice settlers and tourists to the region. The book has had masking tape laid down along all edges of the front and back covers and the entire spine. Both front and back inside covers have tape along the gutter. Pages 19/20 of the advertisements have a tear at the upper corner that has resulted in some creases to the pages. However, the interior text, illustrations, and maps are clean and bright. A very scarce guide book for the British West Indies
