The story of the Ghostway ritual of Shooting Way is principally concerned with evasion of witchcraft or restoration from its effects. In general Ghostway rituals, which exist for several other chants, are directed at removing the "ugly conditions" created by the use of witchcraft; they are concerned with native as contrasted with Enemy Way, which is also conducted according to Ghostway ritual but which is concerned with ghosts of aliens. This story is a continuation of the Shooting Way narrative following the episode of the buffalo journey. Illustrated with two beautiful fold-out color reproductions of sand paintings. Father Berard Haile (1874–1961, was a Franciscan priest and one of the foremost authorities on Navajo anthropology. He entered the Franciscan Order in 1891 and was ordained a priest on June 29, 1898. He served at the Franciscan mission to the Navajo at St. Michaels, Arizona and at other missions in the Southwest, from 1901 to 1954, where he developed an interest in Navajo language and culture. Covers lightly used, internally clean and tight with two color plates in fine condition.
