Publication: Shelby Printing, 1973, Austin

First and only edition. 8vo. Privately printed for friends, allegedly in an edition of less than 100 copies. Inked gift inscription, signed by the author, on the front free fly leaf. Poems by Willie Word. Sketches by Mary Hugh Doerr. Pictorial red cloth, 79 pp., foreword, illustrated, conclusion, epilogue. The 40,000 acre La Puerta Ranch was presented to Richard King II as a wedding present in 1883 by his parents Captain Richard King and his wife Henrietta. The author's father, William Evans Word was ranch foreman from 1895 until 1913, and the author grew up on the ranch. Richard King married Miss Pearl Ashbrook of Wentzville, Missouri. The book is rich in material on the Kings and Klebergs, both King ranches, Santa Gertrudis and early ranch life. A little known modern rarity. A faint small water mark to the top corners of the first few pages, else a near fine, bright copy of a rare book.
