Publication: Robert Hale, 1999, London

First U.K. hardcover edition. First and ONLY Hardcover Edition of the author's second mystery. Only 400 copies printed. Fine in dust jacket. Originally published in 1951 in both the U.S. and U.K. as PBOs. The setting is Deron, a small city in upstate New York where a corrupt political machine is running things, all orchestrated by crime boss Lonnie Raval. In an effort to clean up the place, the city hires Powell Dennison as city manager, a man with a reputation for honesty and efficiency, and Teed Morrow, Dennison’s protégé. Teed is undisciplined and more than a little foolish as he is having an affair with Felice Carboy, the mayor's wife, as he works to blow the lid off the town’s corrupt government. When Felice calls Teed telling him that she has some important information, against his better judgment, he drives to a cabin to meet her. When he arrives, Felice is already there, lying naked on the bed, but suddenly two masked thugs barge in and Teed is knocked out. When he awakens, he finds Felice’s dead body beside him. He panics, dumps her body in the trunk and leaves it at the local dump. And now there’s real trouble! AN INTERESTING FACT: “The odd name given to the main character ... Teed --is, in fact, the surname of Dorothy MacDonald's first husband, to whom she was married for a brief time before meeting and marrying JDM. It is not made clear why the marriage lasted for such a short period, but it most likely had something to do with Teed's wealthy father, a retired Deputy County Treasurer, being held responsible for a missing $250,000 in the County's accounts.”
