Publication: Published by Adolph Wittemann, n d (ca 1884), New York

First edition of what is likely Haynes' scarcest publication. Twelvemo (3 1/2 x 5 inches). Publisher's red cloth with front bearing an elaborated floral border in black with the title in the middle. floral endpapers. Comprised of two parts; the first being a long accordion-fold portrait of 12 Chiefs of various American Indian tribes of the North West including Chief Joseph, Sitting Bull, Jr., Curley the Crow Scout, Squaw Jessie Iron Bull, Crow-Flies-High, Big Medicine Man, Grey Bear, Running Deer, and Rain-in-the-Face, and others. It measures 38 inches. The second part consists of 8 printed pages giving biographies of all the people portrayed within. The accordion-fold has been professionally tipped-in and a couple of seam splits professionally repaired. OCLC only locates one copy of this obscure Haynes item (Huntington). A near fine, bight copy and a very scarce item. The fact that Haynes was still living in Fargo when he undertook this commission which makes us wonder at the date of 1885 given by OCLC. There is no date given in the book and the photographs are done in photolithography (unusual for Haynes). "On an 1881 trip to the newly created Yellowstone Park, via the new line of his railroad company employer, Haynes decided to pursue a commercial concession as park photographer. In 1884 he opened a studio and photography gallery in Yellowstone, selling to tourists prints of the park's natural wonders, such as the Lone Star Geyser Cone" (Smithsonian). The fact that it is boldly stated on the front page of the biography section of this little book that he was in residence in Fargo puts it at least prior to 1884.
