Becker Wagner-Camp 273a: "Alfred Cumming, Superintendent Of Indian Affairs, left Saint Louis on June 6, 1855, aboard the steamer St. Mary to distribute supplies and to investigate the conditions of the tribes of the Missouri Basin, from the Omahas and Pawnees to the Sioux, Mandans, Grow Ventres, Assiniboins, Crows, and Blackfeet. He traveled up the Missouri River as far as the Great Falls, above Fort Benton, and returned to Saint Louis in January of 1856."
