First edition. 16mo. Original printed wrappers, 32 pp., frontis. [portrait of Harry N. Morse]. Six Guns 2001 says, "A very rare little book dealing with Vasquez, Murieta, and other California outlaws of Spanish descent." Adams 150 #124 says, "Rare." Many of the outlaws in this book were giving much trouble to the Wells Fargo Company. Sheriff Morse captured the notorious stage coach bandit, Black Bart. Accompanying this copy is a fine copy of the 1958 reprint edition with Introduction and Notes by J. E. Reynolds. Reynolds contributes a great deal towards the scholarship of this rare and much sought after title, and through his research establishes the publication date between late 1890 and 1895. The original first edition shows evidence of light water staining to the top cover and page edges but does not extend into the text, which is unaffected. Also a small 1" closed tear to bottom of spine, else very good copy. The 1958 reprint edition has a former owner's bookplate affixed to the verso of front fly leaf, else near fine in price-clipped dust jacket. Both copies are housed in a maroon leather clamshell case with raised bands and titles stamped in gold on front cover and spine. HOWES S415. ADAMS 150 124. DYKES p.34. SIX GUNS 2001.
