Publication: Printed at the Mission Press, 1854, Honolulu

First edition. 8vo. Penciled presentation inscription on the front fly leaf: "Presented by Mr. Hastings, Vice Consul, Honolulu, H. I. 1883." Two-tone quarter cloth and boards, [2], iv, iii [blank], 9 -156 pp., introduction. Lorrin Andrews (1795-1865) went to Hawaii in 1828 as a missionary. Within several years he was the first principal of the "Mission Seminary" where he printed the first Hawaiian newspaper. Many of his accomplishments as a teacher and industrialist included translating the entire Bible into the Hawaiian language, an interpreter for Hawaiian Chiefs as well as playing a role within the Hawaiian government, and researching the historic traditions of the Hawaiian people after he resigned from the mission in 1841. He also published a 17,000 word Hawaiian dictionary in 1865. Minor wear to the spine, a few tiny nicks to the fore-edges, and a tiny chip to the lower front and rear corners causing the next few pages to be corner creased. Overall a solid very good copy.
