First edition. Oblong. 11" x 7 3/4" in gray printed softcovers with raised embossed gilt lettering on front cover. Punch-sewn at spine with cream silk braid. A beautifully printed photographic souvenir of route thronged by gold rush miners enroute to the Klondike along the Dyea and Skagway Trails. The images show miners clamoring to board the “Mexico” steamer to the Klondike, Healy & Wilson’s Store at Dyea, “Variety Actresses” contracted to play Dawson fording the Dyea River in rubber boots, and a fight being toted on the back of a guide; Native Americans freighting Gold Rush miners and their supplies up the Dyea River, the treacherous ascent over Chilkoot Pass, and more. Full-page map of the Dyea and Skaguay Trails. Full-page system map of the Northrn Pacific Railway Company with "pointer" inset. La Roche began as a photographer in Pennsylvania for the Lehigh Valley Railroad, but in 1889 came to Seattle to set up a first class gallery, arriving just after the great fire. He was especially noted for his images taken during the Gold Rush and of Northwest Coast Indians. Also includes original mailing envelope. Very slight faint water mark at very lower right corner of several pages. Very good plus.
