Publication: Ben C Jones & Co, Printers, 1900, Austin

First edition. Thick 8vo. Penciled former owner's name of noted Texas author James T. DeShields on the front free fly leaf. Original red cloth, titles and decorations stamped in gold and black on front cover and spine, original decorated front and rear endpapers, viii, 844 pp., preface, frontispiece, illustrated, plates, portraits. BTB 193 says "The work contains 132 accounts of early pioneers, mostly as told by them directly to Sowell." "The book was printed by the Austin firm of Ben C. Jones, and most copies of the original edition were destroyed in that firm's disastrous fire a few years after publication." Howes S 797 says "Nearly all copies were destroyed or damaged by fire." Most of the work relates to Indian fights and Texas Rangers. A few light penciled notations in margins, spine panel darkened, light wear to the spine ends and extremities, else a very good copy of a very scarce and desirable title, housed in a matching cloth slipcase.
