First edition. 8vo. 9" x 6" light blue printed wrappers, 39 pp., double column, double page map. The map is of Lake Superior, 1845, by J. Houghton, Jr. and T. W. Bristol. The author arrived in 1854 and was active in the Quincy Mining Company and the Sturgeon River Lumber Company, and later, state government. Chapters on early copper mining, Civil War conditions, early days in Hancock and Houghton, Hancock's first railroad, missionaries, shipwreck on Isle Royale, looking for pine timber, trip to Perch Lake looking for minerals, mining possibilities in the Silver Mountain District of Houghton County, and much more. Interior clean and bright, covers beginning to tan a bit along the edges, else a near fine copy.
