Brown cloth, pictorial device stamped in gold gilt on the front cover, titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine, xii, 13 - 407 pp., frontispiece (portrait of Doniphan), preface, illustrated, portraits, plates, maps, chapter footnotes. Large foldout map bound into front of volume is titled "A New Map Of Mexico, California & Oregon" published by J.. A. & U. P. James, Cincinnati, 1848. Howes H 754 says, "Doniphan's and Kearney's conquests gave the United States its claim to New Mexico and Arizona, finally acquired by the Gadsden Purchase." Cowan p.115 says, "The account of the operations of Gen. Kearney and others in California is concise and one of the best of the period." Rittenhouse 311 says, "This edition is usually considered the best." "A classic work on the expedition along the SFT during the Mexican War. The units left Fort Leavenworth in late June 1846 and reached Santa Fe on August 18, 1846 (pp. 21-78). They went via Bent's Fort and Raton Pass." Doniphan's troops, with Hughes as an officer, marched southwest into Chihuahua, while Kearney trekked overland to California. Former owner's inked name on the front fly leaf, first two pages are lightly foxed, light cosmetic restoration to the spine ends, else a very good, internally clean copy. Folding map is in near fine condition.
