Illustrated by Stanley L. Wood. The Encyclopedia of Mystery & Detection p. 39-40 says "Guy Boothby's most fearsome creation is the hypnotic Dr. Nikola." "Accompanied by his large black cat, the unscrupulous mastermind pays well for assistance when he requires it, but he demands absolute loyalty.'I demand from you your whole and entire labour,' he tells three associates at the outset of one adventure, 'While you are serving me you are mine body and soul." Professionally recased with the original covers and spine laid-down, former owner's inked name and date (1896), on the front fly leaf, light cosmetic restoration to the spine ends and corners, else a very good copy without dust jacket, as issued. A difficult title.
