Publication: Cramoisy Press, 1863, New York

First edition. 28.5 x 18.1 cm. (11 1/4" x 7 1/4") unprinted green wrappers, xiv [2], 44 pp., preface, bibliography of the Chinook Jargon. This is Shea's Library of American Linguistics XIL and is divided into two parts, Part I :Chinook to English and Part II: English to Chinook. Cowan pages 96 & 97 says "This dictionary contains about 500 words used commonly by all tribes of the northwest." "Begun about the time of Vancouver's visit in 1792, it was enlarged gradually, but probably received its chief impulse after the arrival of Astor's party. The jargon was derived principally from the Chinook and Clatsop, with a few words from other dialects, forming perhaps three-fourths of its extent. The remainder consists of words taken more or less directly from French and English. Spanish words form no part of this jargon, and although many Sandwich islanders were introduced by Hudson's Bay company no word of Kanaka origin appears to have found its way into the jargon." --- Pilling. Interior pages are clean and bright, paper cover have light wear to the spine, corners and extremities, else a near fine copy.
