The Furnace Creek Inn was built by the Pacific Coast Borax Company of Twenty Mule Team fame as a means to save their newly built Death Valley Railroad. Mines had closed and shipping transportation was no longer needed, but mining tourist pockets seemed a sure way to keep the narrow-gauge line active. The Borax Company realized travelers by train would need a place to stay and wealthy visitors accustomed to comfort would be attracted to a luxury hotel. First opened for business in 1927, the Furnace Creek Inn was an immediate success. Unfortunately for the mining company, their railroad closed forever in 1930 when it became apparent tourists preferred the freedom of arriving to Death Valley in their own cars. None the less, the Inn remained popular and construction continued for the next ten years. The Amargosa Hotel was located at Death Valley Junction. The hotel served as a very nice place to stay for both company executives and visiting investors. In addition to the hotel rooms, there was a cafe, a restaurant, an infirmary, a general store and other rooms were bunkhouses for workers. Double-page map at center shows Death Valley in orange, the location of Furnace Creek Inn and the Amargosa Hotel along with automobile routes and a "Table of Distances." Another map shows Death Valley in orange showing scenic view points and historic places along with descriptions. Offers different methods of transportation whether it be by railroad, automobile, air or an automobile service offered in Death Valley. Front panel has previous owner's name stamped twice at the top, a 1/2" closed tear to top of pamphlet fold and with rubbing along fold and with minimal wear to the extremities. Nicely produced and interesting brochure.
