Original red, beveled, blihd-stamped cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, 460 pp. plus 24 pp. of advertisements, frontispiece (portrait of the author), preface, illustrated, plates, portraits, map, a.e.g., advertisements. Full color folding map by Colton was done in 1868, and prepared expressly for Col. Hankins. The map illustrates three Great Lakes (Huron, Michigan, and Superior), the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and northern portions of Iowa and Illinois, plus the southern portion of the British Possessions. The map is in fine, unused condition. The author, after a short stay in St. Paul left from there to travel into the land of the Dakotas. He relates of his experiences en route and while there and makes the point "Dakota Land and the Great North-west are simply different appellations for the same region." Rebound with the original spine laid-down, interior clean and tight, else a very good copy.
