Publication: The State Historical Society of Colorado, 1954, Denver

First edition. Stiff printed wrappers, no pagination (24 pages printed on 1 side only). Handsomely illustrated by Harry G. Miller, Jr. Foreword. This work celebrates the discovery in 1953 of the site of the original fort and the subsequent transfer of the deed to the property to the State Historical Society of Colorado. "The post’s proximity to the Rockies drew in trappers to benefit from the beaver market; it also placed the Bent, St. Vrain & Company near the hunting grounds of the different Plains tribes, who demonstrated their willingness to trade with company. Among those seen trading at Bent’s Fort were the Arapaho, Kiowa, Navajo, and Southern Cheyenne, whose buffalo robes were highly sought. In addition to trading furs, the Plains Indians exchanged horses and mules for the Americans’ tobacco, axes, firearms, and other technological goods." A nice history of the fort, but the highlights of this publication are the accompanying illustrations and map by Harry G. Miller, Jr., which appear on every page. Crease to lower fore-corner of rear wrapper, else near fine.
